  • I expressed a roughly similar thought in the conclusion to A consumer's guide to the foundations of reality

    • Status

    • My own invention, sort of, when I realized that much of the argument over which of the above concepts is the One True Foundation of Reality can be reduced to status-competition games among different social groups. Eg, if materialism is true, scientists get more respect; but if some form of religion wins this competition then theologians and philosophers get more respect. This is most evident today in the sputtering and fruitless debate between "new atheists" and their opponents. In other words, the real underlying force and substance behind everything is status-seeking (see "self-interest" above, but this is on a somewhat more meta level). The question of ontological priority is really a question of social priority, and status thus becomes more fundamental than any of the tools used to achieve it.

  • duration is his key idea but apparently hard to grasp. It's a philosophical concept that points to something inexpressible (?). Seems simple enough to me...but maybe I don't get it. Duration is not just subjective time, it is the real, it is more real than anything, the foundation (see A consumer's guide to the foundations of reality )

      • If everything is ultimately one, why does it bother taking on different forms? Why is there so much extraneous stuff? Apethitikes had an answer. It’s there, he said, because the archē is hatred; the universe we live in is made of hatred
    • Durée and/or Image according to Bergson
      • The only way I can make sense of Bergson is to assume when he talks about durée he means the Tao – it is unquantifiable and unknowable.
      • We do not think real time. But we live it, because life transcends intellect... There is no way of expressing duration in homogeneous terms... To analyze duration is simply to substitute for it a concept which leaves out its essential characteristic.
      • "Image" is attempt to solve mind/matter dualism by decreeing that everything is an image, both material and perceputal
      • I call matter the aggregate of images, and perception of matter these same images referred to the eventual action of one particular image, my body...There is no such thing as matter or image that is not also perception... the real is an immense sensorial system in which every image varies for itself and in a determined manner, as a function of all the others.
